Rib, 2023, 19.25t x 18w x 12.5d, Wood, snail shells, beach treasure, resin, metal
Created by slicing and spreading open a cast-off steam-bent piece of oak a friend gave to me from a boat building project and filling the resulting volume with treasure from a beach, Rib honors low tide, where the crabs rush about but are clearly visible, clams lay hidden but within reach, and all sorts of marine life becomes visible and accessible for inspection. The seabed revealed summons us to scrape, unearth, and gather (using tools of the trade – hands, feet, rakes, shovels, buckets). Surprise, discovery, and joy facilitates the imagination. The inquisitive urge to seek, to revel in the residue of the sea, reveals deeper connections to ourselves, others, and the world around us.
Awarded an Honoroable Mention in Guild Hall’s 84th Artist Members Exhibition, East Hampton, NY.
